Laura R. Prieto

is a professor of History and of Women’s and Gender Studies at Simmons University in Boston. She has a Ph.D. in History from Brown University. She writes about many things, but especially about women, gender, and race in American culture.

I want to increase awareness of how traces of the past are all around us, consciously and unconsciously connecting the present to what came before. In particular, I hope to make women's and gender history more accessible and visible to the general public. I write for both academic and general audiences.

As the Ifill College’s inaugural Alumni Chair in Public Humanities at Simmons University, I am heading a series of projects and programs to engage the public in thinking about the meanings and legacies of the women's suffrage movement, before and after ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920. I regularly host edit-a-thons to help improve the coverage of women's history on Wikipedia. I tweet about history, research, teaching, and other topics here. You’ll also find me listed on Women Also Know History. I present frequently at academic conferences and I enjoy working with teachers, librarians, archivists, public historians, and community organizations. I am available for public talks and programs.
